Hip Arthroplasty

Hip replacement is a surgery to replace a damaged or worn-out hip joint. Dr Moonda replaces the old joint with a prosthesis (artificial joint). Hip replacement surgery may be an option for severe arthritis pain or after a hip fracture.

Why hip arthroplasty is done

These conditions may require hip arthroplasty:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis. Caused by an overactive immune system, this condition produces inflammation that can erode cartilage and sometimes underlying bone. The condition can result in deformed and damaged joints.
  • Osteoarthritis. Also known as wear-and-tear arthritis, osteoarthritis damages the slick cartilage that covers the ends of bones and helps joints move smoothly.
  • Osteonecrosis. When insufficient blood is supplied to the ball portion of the hip joint, the bone may deform and collapse.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Dr Moonda uses minimally invasive surgery. In the minimally-invasive approach, Dr Moonda makes one to two cuts from 2 to 5 inches long.

The small cuts may lessen blood loss, ease pain following surgery, shorten hospital stays, reduce scar appearance, and speed healing.
