Dr Zaheer Moonda

Specialist Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr Zaheer Moonda is a highly skilled Orthopaedic Surgeon practising at Melomed Tokai and Gatesville. Dr Moonda obtained his undergraduate medical degree at Wits university in 1997. Thereafter, he completed his internship at Groote Schuur Hospital. He then spent two years in the UK rotating through various disciplines, including orthopaedics. After returning to South Africa, he joined a GP practice in Midrand, Johannesburg, where he honed his general practice and evidence-based patient care skills.

Dr Moonda moved to Cape Town in 2004 and joined as a partner at Hofmeyr Street Practice in the City Bowl, while studying for a Masters in Sports Medicine through the University of Pretoria. He practised Sports Medicine and GP work for 10 years. He also served as the Sports Doctor for PSL soccer teams, school rugby teams and was the National Sports Doctor for the South African Muay Thai Federation.

He completed his Orthopaedic specialist training in 2018 through the UCT Orthopaedics department at Groote Schuur Hospital, where he also obtained his MMed degree. Dr Moonda subsequently completed a sub-specialist lower limb fellowship focusing on primary and complex hip and knee arthroplasty, and joint preservation with the Cape Hip and Knee Practice and UCT. He has presented at local Orthopaedic conferences and has had visitations and training in units in France, Switzerland and Turkey.

Dr Zaheer Moonda will offer a comprehensive arthroplasty service and will be establishing a Joint Preservation and Robotic Arthroplasty Unit as part of the services offered at Melomed Tokai and Gatesville hospitals.
